Fulham Correctional Centre is located approximately 210 kilometres east of Melbourne’s CBD. The expansion works were approved by the Victorian State Government to assist in managing the growth in Victoria’s prison population. The expansion has seen the medium-security men’s prison increase its capacity from 893 prisoners to approximately 1,000 prisoners.
The works involved five newly constructed buildings, including a 32-bed management unit facility, a 102-bed accommodation block, an activity/recreation building with associated landscaping, a movement control building and a prisoner shop. Three pre-existing blocks within the facility were either refurbished or expanded to provide an upgraded health care facility, laundry amenities, training kitchen, gatehouse (reception) and new carpark.
The project presented a unique risk profile based on the works being undertaken at multiple site locations within a fully operating facility. The nature of the project required regulated movement between the different site locations, facilitated using security escort services and the provision of a mini-bus that operated at the beginning and end of the day.
IBC’s close working relationship with GEO’s appointed client group was a key factor in the successful delivery of the project.
IBC received a High Commendation in the 2021 AIB Professional Excellence in Building Awards; $60 Million Plus Category for the Fulham Correctional Centre Expansion.
