ExxonMobil undertook a comprehensive review and upgrade of all occupied buildings at their Altona Refinery to ensure all buildings provide a safe environment for the occupants in case of a blast event. As a result of the review, it was vital for the existing 2-storey Main Administration Building, which was originally constructed in the early 1990’s, to be upgraded and refurbished, and for a new Central Amenities Building to be constructed.
Main Administration Building
The Main Administration Building (approximately 2,400m2) was fully refurbished, which involved the demolition of the existing reception area, and removal of existing ceilings, internal partitions, and services.
The full internal refurbishment and fit out, complying with current Building Codes Australia (BCA), included the construction of a new entry canopy, refurbishment of all toilet facilities, addition of a lift, provision of new ceilings, replacement of all external windows and doors, replacement of all lightweight external claddings and metal deck roof cladding, the addition of structural bracing and a structural roof truss, new roof access, and replacement of all mechanical and electrical services.
Central Amenities Building
The new Central Amenities Building was a separate facility containing change rooms, toilets and shower amenities for maintenance, operations, and office staff to use.
The single-storey building of approximately 500m2 was constructed with a concrete slab, steel portal frame structure, concrete precast walls, and a metal deck roof, with steel stud frames for internal walls, and complete with surrounding fencing, paving, and landscaping.
