The Footscray Town Hall has a longstanding history as the civic headquarters of the Maribyrnong municpality; built in 1936 in place of the original Town Hall and Courthouse on Napier Street which was constructed decades prior in 1875. The transformation of the site into the Maribyrnong Civic Building and Community Hub will provide a modernised and sustainable solution that allows the delivery of Council and Community services to continue whilst ensuring the historic Footscray Town Hall building is, once again, revitalised for the future.
The existing three-storey Civic Office Building will be detached from the south façade of 80-year-old heritage-listed building and demolished along with the single-level Community Wellbeing Building. In its place, a new two-storey office and community building and a new community park will be constructed with modern and flexible spaces for use by Council staff and community organisations and social groups for meetings, training, larger gatherings and celebrations. The building is targeting a 6 Star Green Star accredited rating and the design includes futureproofing for a potential third floor.
Refurbishment and conservation works will be carried out to the Town Hall Building including, new public meeting spaces, upgrades to internal finishes and external conservation works (within Heritage Victoria Permit requirements).
The Maribyrnong Civic and Community Precinct will be a modern, environmentally friendly space that pays homage to the rich history of the site and wider city, and will be a welcoming place the community can enjoy for years to come.
